(Formerly titled Poirot and the Doctor)

Twenty years ago, Harold's little sister vanished into the decrepit mansion known as the Bonehouse. Now, Harold is a middle-aged Agatha Christie aficionado, still obsessing over what might have been if he'd only been a little braver that day, if he'd only been a little bit more like his childhood hero - the fourth Doctor.

But when Harold meets an out-of-town cosplayer in full Tom Baker kit, he decides to do as the Doctor would have done, and return to the Bonehouse in search of answers. But can one amateur thespian and one drunken science fiction fan really solve this mystery, and put little Elizabeth to rest?

Hercule and the Doctor is a 6500 word mystery about love, loss, and the monsters we wish were living under the stairs. Hercule and the Doctor is also available in Future Tides The Collected Works of Christopher Ruz, a $5.99, 60,000 word collection of 18 short stories and novellas, encompassing everything published by Ruz between 2007 and 2011.

I happened to stumble upon this story the very day my Kindle arrived in the mail. Being that it was free, I thought what the heck? Might as well give it a try.

The story focuses on a stage actor who, at an early age, lost his sister. Upon meeting a Doctor Who fan decked out as Tom Baker, the actor sets out to discover the fate of the girl.

At 18 pages, there's not much that can be said without spoiling the plot, but the story is a lovely, bittersweet look into the process of grief experienced by those who lose loved ones at an early age, and the way they cope with it throughout life. I can't decide whether or not it should have been slightly longer, but as it is it clips on at a good pace and is a satisfying read.

There are a couple of typographical errors that detract slightly from the story, but I think they seem far more numerous than they are simply because of the story's length. Apart from those, the formatting is good and the prose is strong. I will very probably pick up the author's $7 short story collection in the near future.

Hercule and the Doctor eBook Christopher Ruz Reviews

Poirot. The Doctor. Cosplayers, London, realities bleeding into each other, science fiction and mystery fandoms, second chances...

Poirot. And the Doctor. Wasn't that enough to hook you?
A nice little Dr. Who story that even gets a little meta at times. Good sunday afternoon read. Highly recommended.
If the cover alone doesn't sell you on this trip into the strange, then nothing will. A perfect representation of the concept behind this story, it's what hooked me from the start. Poirot and Doctor Who? In the same place and the same time? I was interested in finding out how Chris managed to pull this off, and I have to say he does it wonderfully. It doesn't come across forced, and it all plays out nicely to a nice kicker of an ending. He captures the 'characters' of the two perfectly, while they both still remain very human. The short story format is one that I'm a tough sell on, but Poirot and the Doctor is just yet another shining example of how Christopher Ruz keeps hooking me time and time again.
It is a very short but good book. Also very sad. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves doctor who.
If you've ever tried to convince someone why science-fiction is important, or just looking for a short-story that will leave an impression, this is a must-read.
Poirot and the Doctor teams an actor playing Poirot on stage and a Tom Baker cosplayer in London for a Doctor Who convention together to solve a mystery.

The story was fun and bittersweet, the writing was clever, and it certainly left me wanting more. There were different places I might have taken the story, but author Christopher Ruz knows where it's going and takes you there. It's humourous at times and ends bittersweet and I'd recommend it to fans of good writing and Doctor Who.
This short story was both brilliant and heart-breaking, just like any good Doctor Who story should be. Although from the title I was expecting it to be funnier than it was, I was in no way disappointed with the story. It is a wonderful story of a man who, as a child, lost his sister in a "haunted house" and now, 20 years later, me meets someone dressed like his boyhood hero The Doctor and drums up enough courage to return to the house...as far as what happens next, you should read it. You really should, whether you are a fan of Poirot, Doctor Who, or just a good mysterious short story. Excellent!

I also loved how, in roughly 20 pages, the author manages to create some very real, living-breathing characters that you connect with instantly. That is one thing I often find a problem with short-stories they are too short, so I don't always feel like I connect with the characters very much. Not so in this story. It's brilliant from start to finish. Worth the 0.99 cents!
